Upload and share a file link

A file link gives an uploaded file a public address you can share. Choose it for a document or download rather than for a page with several content blocks.

How do I create a file link?

  1. Open File links and select File link.
  2. Choose a file in one of the formats accepted by the upload field. Check the size limit shown on that form.
  3. Enter an available short URL ending if allowed, or leave it empty for a generated address.
  4. Select Create file URL to create the resource.
  5. Finish the editor settings, including download behavior or protection when available, and save.
  6. Open the public address in a separate window and check that the correct file opens or downloads.

Which files can I upload?

The current create form lists common image formats, PDF, ZIP, RAR, DOC, and DOCX. The size shown next to the field is the limit to follow for that upload. Compress or prepare an appropriate smaller file if needed; changing the filename extension does not convert a file.

Can I replace a file later?

Open the existing file link and use its file upload control to replace the file, then save and test the same public address. Keep the short URL unchanged when it is already shared or encoded in a QR code. Check any force-download setting if you want the file downloaded rather than displayed by a browser.

How should I protect a private document?

Do not treat a hard-to-guess public address as access control. Review the available protection settings before sharing and test them from a fresh browser session. Avoid uploading documents that should not be exposed through this service.
