Track campaigns with UTM parameters

UTM parameters label a marketing campaign in a destination URL. Consistent labels help you compare traffic sources without creating a different landing page for every campaign.

Which values should I use?

  • utm_source: the source, such as a newsletter or social network.
  • utm_medium: the channel, such as email or social.
  • utm_campaign: a recognizable campaign name.
  • utm_content and utm_term: optional detail when your reporting setup needs it.

How do I add the parameters?

  1. Decide your labels before creating campaign links. Use a consistent spelling and capitalization.
  2. If the link editor offers UTM Parameters for your plan, use the fields provided and save.
  3. Alternatively, prepare the tagged destination URL before placing it in a short link or Link block. Use ? before the first query parameter and & between additional parameters.
  4. Test the public link and confirm that the final destination retains the intended parameters.
  5. Review the applicable UTM report and the destination’s analytics using the same campaign labels.

What is an example?

An illustrative destination is https://example.com/menu?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=menu_launch. Replace the example domain and labels with your own. Avoid putting names, email addresses, or other private information into tracking parameters.

Why are there no UTM results?

Check that the tagged address was actually used and that the parameters were not removed or duplicated by another redirect. A UTM report about traffic reaching a bio page and analytics on the final external destination measure different parts of a journey.
